I'll Tell You Why I Can't Wear Those Clothes

Noreen O'Sullivan visited me at the Soft office in Brooklyn last year. She is a former New Yorker, former elementary school teacher who currently lives in Denmark and has two daughters. I was very inspired by our meeting--she had wonderful ideas for Soft, great constructive feedback, and expressed joy that some of our styles had made her daughters dressing experience more tolerable, even enjoyable. She said that she was working on a secret project, which made me very curious, but she could not disclose any details until it was finished or nearly finished. I knew only it had something to do with creating awareness about Sensory Processing Disorder, and helping families and children understand the disorder and get the help they need.

About a year later, Noreen emailed me a link to her facebook page, and told me about a series of children's books she was writing called "I'll Tell You Why..." The first one, "I'll Tell You Why I Can't Wear Those Clothes," was already written, and dealt with tactile defensiveness, or sensory sensitivity. The mission of the series, as stated on her website:

"The children's book series will identify a problem, explain a behavior, introduce solutions, and offer awareness and understanding - all in a 10 minute read. Intended to be an interactive read with your child, each page offers a drawing journal with guiding questions. This provides an opportunity for children to talk about their individual needs. For the time being, the series is focusing on sensory issues, as there seems to be a lack of mainstream awareness in these areas of child development."

I was very excited to see the first book, and it arrived on my desk yesterday morning. I was so impressed first of all with the design. It is beautiful, modern, simple, yet also totally whimsical and inviting. The book is filled with photographs of Noreen's daughter engaged in the daily routine of her life, which immediately invites you to really empathize with the written description of her challenges. My favorite part* conceptually, is that opposite each text/photo page, there is an open space with an open ended question--inviting the reader to share in words or pictures their own related experience. As a teacher, I loved books that invited children to write in them! It really made them connect and remember the experience of the book's message.

I am looking forward to the rest of the series. Currently it is available on Amazon UK, but Noreen is working on getting distribution in the US. I will keep everyone updated on that! The book is joining a small but significant and impressive group of wonderful children's books on Sensory Processing Disorder (see below list).

Did you all know that the term 'mental retardation' has been replaced by the term ' intellectual disability'? In the new DSM-V the term will be officially replaced, but that does not mean we need to keep using the word 'mental retardation' to evoke more stigmas attached to the word 'retardation'.

On your child's current IEP they may be classified as MR not ID, the forms will be changed in the upcoming future. Spread the good word!

National Autism Conference!

The conference will kick off on Thursday, November 11^th with a full-day Special Education Law Workshop where parents will learn strategies to advocate for the best possible IEP for their children. Editorial - Gating of sensory information differs in patients with interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome

Interesting new research suggests that patients with interstitial cystitis and painful bladder syndrome are associated with deficits in early stage information processing and specifically with ineffective gating of incoming sensory information. Do IC/BPS Patients Process Sensory Information Abnormally?

Altered sensory processing, including increased pain sensitivity and decreased habituation to non-noxious sensation has been suggested in some studies in patients with IC/BPS. Lisa Ann Kilpatrick and coworkers from Los Angeles sought to carry this observation further to determine whether sensory processing deficiency of the central nervous system manifested by an inability to adequately filter incoming visceral afferent information may be central to the disorder.

As measured in humans by the eye blink reflex, the acoustic startle response is a rapid defensive response to a sudden intense stimulus that is mediated by brainstem structures and modulated by higher brain structures. Acoustic startle response amplitude can be decreased by a weak nonstartling stimulus (prepulse) presented 30-300 milliseconds before the startle-eliciting stimulus. This phenomenon is referred to as PPI or prepulse inhibition. It is considered a neurophysiologic measure of the early pre-attentive stages of information processing and an operational measure of sensorimotor gating.

The researchers recruited 14 female patients with IC/BPS and 17 female controls. PPI was assessed at 60 and 120 millisecond prepulse-to-startle stimulus intervals. They looked at the relationships between prepulse inhibition, neuroticism and acute stress ratings.

In this, the first study to evaluate sensorimotor gating in patients diagnosed with IC/BPS, the data presented is interpreted to show that patients as a group have a significant deficit in PPI vs. controls, suggesting decreased ability to adequately filter incoming information and perform appropriate sensorimotor gating. The greatest PPI decrease (impaired sensorimotor gating) was reported in those whom increased stress was reported during the study procedures. Patients reported significantly greater stress after the procedure than controls. On the other hand, increased neuroticism was associated with a greater PPI, and thus had a moderating effect on the lowered PPI.

The authors conclude that this preliminary study suggests that IC/BPS is associated with deficits in early stage information processing and specifically with inefficient gating of incoming sensory information. Previous studies have shown that vigilance can increase PPI, perhaps explaining the mitigating effect of neuroticism/trait anxiety.

SPD Parent Zone Organization

Kelly Jurecko and Dawn Eagle have children who suffer from SPD, an incurable disorder. The parents operate the non-profit organization SPD Parent Zone. It works to inform mothers and fathers about the signs of SPD, which affects one in six children. Those affected cannot process sensation--sight, smell, hearing, taste, touch, and movement--the way most people can. Depending on which senses are involved, a child may have trouble with jobs that come naturally to other kids, like feeding themselves or putting on clothes. This makes it hard for them to function at school, in public, and even at home. Those suffering from SPD become very disorganized and confused. Do you know this child...?

I don't know if I'd agree that SPD is incurable...most behaviors and sensitivities can be changed! It's a process and takes time, but it is not totally out of the question that some sensitivities can be shaped! Just some food for thought....

I spent my childhood, teenage years and early adulthood in the inner suburbia of Melbourne, before spending most of my 20’s living overseas and exploring different cultures and traditions, learning and developing as a person.

The beginning of my 30’s saw the birth of my gorgeous boy, Zade . Now Zade is four and I’m old enough to stop volunteering my age! The two of us live with our wonder dog, Jemima in rural Victoria, where we are looking forward to starting our new veggie garden and enjoying bush walking and playing in the sand at the beach.

I have studied early childhood and real estate and worked in both these fields as well as others, but have mostly within children’s services and enjoyed the relationships and challenges of working with families and meeting their needs and I have been able to continue this in my own business, Echo Way.

Tips for your fumbling tots with SPD!

Movement tools~ calming and organizing movement activities, such as linear swinging and rocking, can help prepare your tot to attempt more challenging tasks.
- Keep swings close to the ground with plenty of impact mats underneath to cushion falls.

Muscle Tools~ to increase body awareness play games where your tot pushes, pulls, tugs, or carries heavy things.
- Set up small obstacle course with a few items initially and gradually add more, asking your tot to help.
- Place coloring sheets or paper on a clipboard to help your tot stabilize the paper while coloring or drawing.

Hi all! As you may know, we are getting closer to launching our first (of many) seamless sock styles! We have been working on these for two years--testing and reworking them to get them entirely seamless, and soft as can be--for extremely sensitive feet.

Be apart of a very important research study about AUTISM EDUCATION! Looking for one family whose child has been diagnosed with Autism within the last year. For 8 weeks the researcher will observe and document the experiences that a family encounters, including: navigating health and wellness systems, choosing therapies, and strategies that are best for the child, learning from other families, engaging in support groups, and/or learning opportunities, and making important decisions for the child and family.

Science Sense Tours at the American Museum of Natural Histor

I was so excited to be asked to be a part of a panel yesterday to discuss Autism Awareness and companies that are catering to the Autism Community. Lee Knowlton from Pump It Up and Bounce For Autism was also on the panel via skype, as was the most wonderful Autism Mom and Autism Society Local Chapter (532) President from Southern New Jersey, Catherine Medovich. She offered to make me Autism Awareness jewelry! The hosts were great--Dr. Cynara Coomer, along with her co-host who was filling in for Dr. Manny Alvarez, ABA therapist and Special Educator Jennifer Cerbasi. New Research articles comparing SPD and SMD!

AUTISM RESEARCH. A study authored by the SPD Foundation’s neuroscience team was published in Frontiers in Integrative Neuroscience late last year. “Physiological and behavioral differences in sensory processing: a comparison of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Sensory Modulation Disorder” was one of the first studies ever to directly compare and contrast SPD and Autism Spectrum Disorder. You’ll find this and other clinical reports in Our Library under Autism and SPD.

Parents- it's great to keep up with new scientific developments in autism and SMD...sometimes the articles are a bit hard to get through or understand (not everyone has a background in neuroscience!), but the more you read the more you'll understand the new interesting findings in the field. It all impacts you and your children's well-being. I'll do my best to find more articles that are a little more accessible to everyone, but in the mean time...read on!

Feeding the hungry brain with music

Check out this article about the relationships between music and the autistic/SPD mind. Music therapy, listening therapy, and integrated listening systems (linking auditory techniques with movement) are a few therapies that haven't been explored by most families, yet they are found to be most effective. I've seen it myself work in the classroom. When I was working in a classroom full of emotionally disturbed, and autistic 5-8 year olds, pandaemonium broke loose! Chairs, desks, pencils, Spongebob backpacks all went flying! Screaming! Tantrums! And as soon as the teacher put on some music... the kids were INSTANTLY soothed and able to calm themselves down to a normal level. The best part was when the teacher leaned over and whispered to me, "Music does soothe the savage beast." I'll never forget this important tool when teaching this population!

DSM-5 Add SPD!

Hello all! There's been lots of hubbub regarding the new DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5th edition) that's in the works. They are actually eliminating Asperger's Syndrome, Rett's Syndrome, and Childhood Disintegrated Disorder for the upcoming edition. Many advocates are fighting for SPD to be officially added. Anyone may submit information or suggestions for added criteria at dsm5.org. Submissions are open up until April 20th, and the final version is due out May 2013. We encourage you to speak up for your children or loved ones! If it does make it into the new version, this means more related services may be made available for your child's comfort and over all well being!

I’m Brie, a new intern at Soft. I look forward to blogging with you all, and keeping you updated on new events or issues regarding anything sensory related! I’m currently in the middle of my M.A. in Intellectual Disabilities/Autism at Teachers College, Columbia University. I student teach at P.S. 226m in a class with students with autism. Last summer I produced an art show featuring two of my favorite artists who are autistic. Dis/Ability Organizations

Our non-profit partnership program will begin in March 2011. Soft will be donating percentage of profits to large national organizations that make a huge difference in the lives of children with sensory disorders, including Autism, Aspergers, Sensory Processing disorder and a range of developmental disabilities. In addition, once a year, we will award a one-time grant to a smaller community group or organization. Grant applications will be available in March 2011, and the first grant will be awarded in August 2011. To be the first to find out when our non-profit partnership program is in place and applications are available, please sign up for the Soft email list.

Give India

Soft is proud and excited about our manufacturing partnerships with India. We have a close, personal relationship with our factory representatives there, and they are so supportive and understanding of our mission. We wanted to give back in a way that compliments our beliefs about inclusive education. Through the organization Give India, Soft has started to support children with disabilities through a variety of local organizations. Our first donation funded art therapy for a non-verbal child for three months! Check our blog for regular updates on the specific programs, children and organizations we are helping to fund.

Monthly Giving

Soft launched their Monthly Giving Program in December 2009, benefiting the Autism Society of America, and the SPD Foundation. We are incredibly proud to support organizations dedicated to funding research and support, and that are so effective in their ability to reach the millions of families in need of their resources through local chapter outreach.

Supporting Teachers, Schools and Students

Bi-annually, Soft helps to fund a grant written by teachers, for teachers through the online charity organization DonorsChoose.org. Recently, we helped to fund a grant written by an Occupational Therapist in an inner city school in Massachusetts who needed sensory equipment for her students with Autism. You can read more about that project here. Check our blog for our most current projects, thank you notes from the teachers and students, and any photos they share with us.

In December 2009, we donated our Soft Sensory Tees to the entire pre-K class at a local elementary school in Bushwick Brooklyn. Later this year, at the request of a concerned parent, we donated our sensory tees to children with SPD in the Developmental Preschool Class at Silver First Elementary School in Everett, WA. Soft Non Profit Support!

As many of you know, part of the Soft mission is supporting organizations we believe in--organizations which support Autism and SPD research, and inclusive education. We have outlined the following plan for when we are profitable:

Dis/Ability Organizations

Our non-profit partnership program will begin in March 2010. Soft will be donating percentage of profits to large national organizations that make a huge difference in the lives of children with sensory disorders, including Autism, Aspergers, Sensory Processing disorder and a range of developmental disabilities. In addition, once a year, we will award a one-time grant to a smaller community group or organization. Grant applications will be available in March 2010, and the first grant will be awarded in August 2010. Monthly Giving
Today we started our SOFT MONTHLY GIVING PROGRAM, which will benefit the Autism Society of America. We are incredibly proud to support an organization dedicated to funding Autism research and support, and that is so effective in their ability to reach the millions of families in need of their resources through local chapter outreach. Here is the letter they sent to us to thank us! Yay!

ASA is the nation’s leading grassroots autism organization that offers vital programs to improve the lives of those affected by autism. Opening Ceremony releases Where the Wild Things Are inspired line of clothing

The upcoming release (October 16) of Spike Jonze's "Where the Wild Things Are," adapted, of course, from Maurice Sendak's genius story that has touched millions of childhoods--has inspired a slew of artists to create work based on the magic of this story and highly anticipated magic of this film. 24, to be exact, according to Vice Magazine--which is presenting "24 Artists Inspired by WTWTA." The one that stood out the most--was the above pictured WTWTA-inspired clothing collection by Opening Ceremony. The pictures are priceless, the clothing, unfortunately, is not.

Isaac Mizrahi: Because You're American, and You're Not A Stone

For those who are unequally obsessed with Isaac Mizrahi, and who don't share the same unending lust for the 1995 documentary Unzipped--the above title is a quote. When asked: "Why do you like Mary Tyler Moore?" Isaac respond, exasperated: "Because I'm American, and I'm not a STONE."

His latest collection which showed today was anything but stone like. Full of feeling and personality--Isaac brings humanity to fashion in his collections--which I feel are at the heart of the many millions of ways he spends his time (and gets paid to) these days. His playful accessories tell a story. His use of color makes you feel alive and very connected to the world (country, and specifically city if you are in NY) you live in. There was something very Broadway about it (in a good old fashioned way), very strolling down the avenue.

Cathy Horyn put it best, "I guess," on her NYT blog when she wrote: "It was a nice day, I guess, for American fashion."

Isaac does evening like few others in my opinion, but it doesn't fully capture the essence of the show, so for him, two highlights:for the soul of New York

NY Fashion Week: Rodarte

Dyed, torn, scraped, scratched, dipped, bleached, soaked and shredded. Every one the Mulleavys chosen fabrics and materials was somehow scarred yet still ethereal and beautiful. The designers are masters of draping the female form, and finding colors and textures that engage the eye and each other.

NY Fashion Week Reviews: Marc Jacobs

This year Fashion week hit us like a ton of bricks here at Soft, being that we are 2 weeks away from production, and 2 months from our LAUNCH (omg). That does not mean we stop looking at the world around us for inspiration, but it does mean we have no time for real reviews. Instead, we will be doing a daily (sometimes more than once a day) microblog (comments, links, photos, and posts) about what hits us upside the head on the runway this week. We are already late. So here is what's what:

Marc Jacobs: We love you for not showing us leather, studs and pointy shoulders. We are so over all except the latter, and do not want any more Balmaniacs walking the streets of new york. Marc gave us ethnic pattern references, organic shapes, sportswear elements, diaphanous fabrics, whimsical accessories, and womanly silhouettes and doll-like make up that inspires and embraces womanly women. It's all over the place, but that is why we love it.

For a close to a year now, I have been following the daily blog of a thirteen year old fashion forward thinking girl named Tavi, The Style Rookie. Recently in one of her video posts, she said that she reminds a lot of people of them at her age--the difference (and significant one) being that she has the internet. The internet, and the immediate editorial abilities and possibilities that come with the digital camera. It rang true for me as well--as I spent hours alone in my room cutting up clothes, creating looks and modeling them for myself in the mirror--starting already at age three. The only thing was--no one ever saw these creations--except for me and my audience of stuffed animals. Occasionally someone took a picture (below), but those were quietly hidden in a shoebox under the bed.
Through the word-of-mouth passing about of her blog, Tavi has been picked up by the cognoscenti of the fashion world--and this fashion week--is living her life like it's golden. I found out about her through a good friend who is design director at Calvin Klein--and remember thinking at the time, when Tavi's world seemed more insular--"does this girl know that major influencers are taking notice of her extraordinary creativity? Does she know her name is being passed around by skinny, smoking, fashion geniuses? She was being recognized for her refreshingly creative eye--and her seeming un-self-conscious grasp on what every designer/editor/fashion follower wants to harness--the newest newness. The future.This week I discovered Tavi is on two covers of Pop Magazine, has become a muse for Rodarte over the past few months, sat front row (along with Madonna) at Marc Jacobs, was profiled by the Wall Street Journal and Women's Wear Daily, along with much more that I am sure I missed. A recent video on her blog admits--now that this media attention (and the fact that she just told her teachers about her blog) might bring a few more readers to her site, it's time to present herself in a professional manner. What is so cool about Tavi is that she references things from the past that are actually cool right now, and actually matter in terms of the evolution of fashion right NOW. I was so bored recently when I went to see the September Issue, by the banal references of the Vogue photoshoots. OOOH, twenties. OOOOH Fellini films. WOW, Rococo. Yawn, snore, bore. Grace Coddington might be a creative romantic, but her references seem stale, and Wintour cares about palatability and retail numbers making the references both stale and entirely un-challenging. Lets look, in contrast, at the last 5 or so references on Style Rookie: Harold and Maude, Where the Wild Things Are (coming out soon as a Spike Jonze directed, Maurice Sendak endorsed feature film, btw), Hitchcock’s Vertigo and The Birds, and Diane Keaton in Woody Allen’s Manhattan. In other words: gingham, plaids and tweeds, textures and neutrals, eerie and dramatic sets, and classic NY Fall. So much more interesting, engaging, young, and relevant—and ps—could still be referenced to sell clothing.

Tavi may be the new girl in town, but I have a feeling she will be around for a LONG time to come.
